Rondy Charity Calcutta Cowboy humorist Andy Nelson and musher Art Stoller. Proceeds from this year's Calcutta benefitted The McKenzie Foundation—$1311.25 WHERE: Bottoms Up Brewery, 406 West Pine Street, Pinedale, WY 82941 (307) 367-BEER (i) "Calcutta wagering" means wagering on the outcome of amateur contests, cutter horse racing, dog sled racing, professional rodeo events or professional golf tournament in which those who wager bid at auction for the exclusive right to "purchase" or wager upon a particular contestant or entrant in the event and when the outcome of the event has been decided the total wagers comprising the pool, less a percentage "take-out" by the event's sponsor, is distributed to those who "purchased" or wagered upon the winning contestants or entrants. Learn more about Wyoming gambling law here. The most interesting element of Calcutta Auctions is in determining an appropriate wager for each contestant, as the payoff will directly hinge on the size of the pot and thereby the size of the bids being placed. Thus the value of each team fluctuates during the course of the betting. Andy Nelson, Cowboy DJ of the Year auctions off each musher to the crowd reading a little history on the musher all truthful but horn blowing encouraged plus a little history on the brand that they will be wearing. High bids get the musher. Who gets the money? All Calcutta money will go to charity and whoever bets correctly on the 1st, 2nd and 3rd place team. The money gathered is split with win/place/show bidders winning a portion of the pot (after the race determines the 1st, 2nd and 3rd places), and local charity The McKenzie Hartwig Foundation receives the other portion of the gathered funds. Please take a moment to learn about McKenzie here. What's a Bookie's Hope? An outsider is sometimes referred to as the bookie's hope, because if the unfavored and lightly backed horse (or dog team) was to win the race (as opposed to the favorite which would be heavily backed), the bookie would come out ahead (through paying less to investors than he/she would if the favorite won). All Purse money for the GRR is generously donated by BP America. Return to Rondy home. |
